These were two reports separated only by how much ground they covered. They are now one report that scales from a single township to multi-state screening, renamed for what it is actually for.
What This Report Answers
- Where is the play? High-prospectivity sections identified from documented mineral occurrences, recorded production history, geochemical anomaly signal, and the district framework the ground sits within.
- Which ground deserves the first dollar? Districts and sections ranked by a composite target score, with the reasoning behind the ranking shown rather than asserted.
- Where can we actually go? Every candidate section screened against surface management status, withdrawals and conservation closures, and mineral estate ownership — and sorted into open, verify, or closed. Only open ground anchors the targets.
- Who else is looking here? Claim activity across the study area by holder, recent staking patterns, and where positions are concentrating — the competitive read on the region.
- What has this district produced before? Historic mining district context and the recorded site register — producers, past producers, prospects, and occurrences — so a greenfield target is distinguishable from a brownfield one.
How the Ranking Works
Districts are ranked by a composite target score built from known deposit density and stream- and soil-sediment geochemical anomalies, each normalized across the districts in the study. Anomaly thresholds are matrix-stratified and computed by a published, cited method rather than an in-house rule of thumb — a stream sediment sample is judged against stream sediment samples, not against rock chips.
What is deliberately not in the score: existing claim activity and land withdrawals. Both are reported, prominently, as current land status. Neither is scored. A section is not more prospective because somebody staked it, and it is not less prospective because it is withdrawn — those facts describe who holds the ground and whether you can get it, not what is under it. Mixing them into a prospectivity score is how a target list quietly becomes a map of other people's decisions.
The Land Status Screen
Every candidate section is run against a calibrated locatability screen that models the three legal gates for mineral location — surface management status, mineral withdrawals, and mineral estate ownership — at the PLSS section level. Each section comes back as:
- Open — federal-surface ground open to location, carrying enough open acreage to be worth a claim and close enough to a documented occurrence to be worth pursuing. These anchor the targets.
- Verify — split estate, partial withdrawal, or status that cannot be resolved from the record alone. Carried as an explicit watchlist rather than quietly counted as available.
- Closed — withdrawn, closed surface, non-federal minerals, leasable-only, or conservation-closed. Excluded from the target set. Affirmatively closed ground is never presented as something to verify.
This screen is an advisory prioritization tool and a rough guide, not a determination of land status or title. It resolves status at the section level. That is the right resolution for deciding where to look and completely the wrong resolution for deciding where to stake — which is what the next two steps of the workflow are for.

A Prospect Sections sheet with one row per candidate section — deposits, commodities, development status, claim activity, locatability status, land rank, and the specific reason any section is not fully open — plus a sheet per dataset and a Report Facts sheet.
The Map
A regional map at publication resolution showing targets colored by whether the ground is open — and the report’s own layers to load into your own project: study area, ranked prospect sections, target stars, claims, and deposits. Shapefiles, a file geodatabase, and pre-styled layer files carrying the printed symbology, for ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, or any GIS platform.
The Watchlist
Every section flagged for verification, itemized with the reason. This is the working list that feeds directly into a Land Status Report on the ground you decide to pursue.
What ships with the map — and what doesn’t
You get this report’s own layers — study area, ranked prospect sections, target stars, claims, deposits — as shapefiles, a file geodatabase, and pre-styled layer files carrying the printed symbology, ready to load into ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, or any GIS platform over your own basemap.
The basemap itself does not ship. ChoraQuest’s cartographic project, its terrain and context layers, are curated in-house and are not distributed.
Every Number Is Checked
Each figure printed in the report is computed once, from the same fact base that populates the delivered workbook — a printed number equals the row count of the sheet that backs it, enforced by an automated gate on every report generated. The report also carries its own provenance table: each headline figure, its value, and the method behind it. Narrative prose is written around those verified facts and cannot introduce a figure of its own.
